A 30-year-old Marine Corps veteran is the latest recipient of a truck and cash from Progressive Insurance's Keys to Progress program. James Rose of Kathleen, Georgia was awarded the 2019 Freightliner Cascadia truck and $50,000 to help with business startup costs.

Transponder Keys

Transponder keys (also called microchips) are found in the majority of modern automobiles. This technology is designed to prevent theft of cars, since it only allows the owner of the vehicle to start it. The keys are more expensive than flat keys, however they offer a level of security that is well worth the cost.

Transponder keys are equipped with a microchip that sends an identification code with an indication when the key is within the range of the antenna. The signal is read by a receiver located near the ignition switch on your vehicle. The transmitter and receiver communicate to determine if the correct code is in place. This process, referred to as "hotwiring", can be prevented using the transponder. The key emits an electronic signal that has a different serial every time it is turned on.

General Motors invented the first transponder key in the 80s. They created the VATS system in order to stop the growing Corvette theft rate. Since then, a majority of major automakers have integrated the technology into their vehicles.

Typically, a transponder keys will look exactly like a normal car key, with the exception of a plastic cover that houses the transponder. This kind of key can be cut in a variety of different ways, such as cutting it with a standard saw laser cut, a laser cut, or a sidewinder cut. Some transponder keys feature a key blade, while others are entirely bladeless.

Some transponder keys may also be activated using the remote control. They transmit an identification code that is unique along with an individual code. This type of key can be programmed to lock and unlock your car doors, turn on the engine, and turn off the lights. It can even be used to operate the panic button in case you're involved in an accident.

It is important to remember that not all transponder keys for cars are alike and some can't be duplicated using the standard key cutting machine. If you are unsure about the type of key you have in your car, it is recommended to speak with an automotive locksmith who will help determine the exact type of key that you have and which will work with your car.

VATS Keys

VATS keys, also known as Vehicle Anti Theft System, are a standard feature on many GM automobiles. They can be a great protection against car theft. They work by transmitting signals each time the key is turned. This signal is transmitted by the key to the engine control module which tells it there is a functioning key. The module then adjusts the ignition lock cylinder to accept the correct key for starting.

Two very small wires are located in the key. The wires could be damaged and cause your car to start. Typically you will notice that the security light stays on, or you may have to turn the key several times before it begins. There are several ways the signal may be damaged. The most frequent reason is that the key has been turned incorrectly or lost. Another way is if the ignition switch was replaced by one that isn't compatible or if you used an aftermarket key. This is due to the fact that different keys may have a resistor that is different from the one being transmitted to engine control module.

A VATS interrogator can be a great way to test the VATS module.  The Keylab  can be utilized by dealers or locksmiths to read the key. The tool has an VATS code calculator built in that can determine the resistance of your key. You can also test the key by hand to determine its resistance. This method could be time-consuming as there are 15 different resistance values for keys.

VATS keys are available in two different types one being a 6-cut key that has a single side and a 10-cut one with an extra-wide side. The only difference is that keys cut in 6-cut have a smaller bow or head than keys cut to 10. It is also important to know that a no crank or no start situation can be caused by the contamination of the key pellet and leaf contacts within the ignition lock cylinder. Liquid lubricants should not be applied to the key bow or pellet. Powdered graphite is a great for lubricant on the key cylinder.

Key Fobs

Most people recognize a key fob as an electronic device that replaces traditional keys to unlock a car, home or apartment. They use an RF transmitter with a short range, radio frequency identification (RFID) chip and antenna to communicate with a wireless receiver in the device they're controlling. The receiver adjusts to the unique coded signal of the key fob, which is in line with the information stored in its RFID tag.

Key fobs can be programmed to perform many things in addition to locking and unlocking doors. They can also be used to control home automation systems, such as Z-Wave. You can program each button on the key fob to perform one or several Z-Wave scenarios by using an app for smartphones. A key fob can even start an air conditioner or furnace prior to your arrival home and set the temperature just perfect for your arrival.

You can also use your key fob to remotely lower the windows of your vehicle. Some minivans, for example allow drivers to do this using a key fob rather than manually rolling them down or up with their hands. By pressing the panic button on a key fob you can trigger an alarm in the case of a burglary. This loud noise will deter burglars, and give you time to call for assistance.

The lost key fob could be located using your phone. With an app, you can make your fob emit a loud noise until it's found. This is a great help in crowded parking lots and when it's easy to be distracted by other drivers or lose your keys in the crowd.

The battery of the key fob needs to be replaced every few months. The coin-shaped batteries are usually available at hardware stores and parts departments for automakers, and some big-box retailers. Many people can change batteries by themselves, but it's essential to consult your owner's guide or online videos for instructions.

Certain key fobs can be copied, but the latest models are protected by encryption to stop this. This makes them more difficult to copy, particularly when the person who is copying them isn't acquainted with the encryption system.

Keyless Entry

Keyless entry systems work by using a transmitter that can be controlled remotely from the key fob that allows you to unlock or start the vehicle. The transmission is based upon the signals sent by the fob and encrypted to block access by anyone who is not authorized. Some keyless systems utilize rolling codes for security which is crucial for fleet vehicles.

Remote keyless systems provide convenience to cars by opening the doors prior to you touch the handle or walk away. It will also turn on your lights as you approach the vehicle and activate another 10 accessories in accordance with proximity. These systems are becoming increasingly popular in cars and trucks and offer increased comfort in a variety of scenarios.

The installation process is easy and requires only a few tools. The installation manual will include an electrical diagram that outlines the exact wires that connect to the keyless system in your car. The wiring is likely to be located beneath the cover of your steering wheel, so you'll need to remove it to gain access to the wires you need. After you've connected the wires then cover all exposed wires in black electrical tape.

A keyless entry system can be vulnerable to relay attacks, which is why it's important to store the key fob in a signal-blocking pouch or box when not in use. To reduce the risk of theft, you should park your vehicle in a location that is secured. For added protection, you can also install a GPS tracking device in your vehicle to track its location and notify you when it leaves a designated area.
